Thailand's government has justified its expected purchase of at least two ex-German Navy Type 206A diesel-electric submarines, stating that the procurement is in response to neighbouring countries' naval modernisation activities.
The German Navy has operated six Type 206A submarines for 35 years but they are expected to be decommissioned soon as part of Berlin's bid to save operating costs.
The procurement is expected to cost more than USD220 million, depending on the number of submarines acquired and the scope of modernisation needed for the vessels, although the purchase has not yet been allocated any funds.
Thailand's deputy prime minister, Suthep Thaugsuban, is in charge of national security affairs in the country and indicated in a 28 March government-published statement that the acquisition was regarded as a priority due to regional procurement trends.
